In early 1960 Edward E. Wine left his job as a Manassas postman to enter the sheet metal and plumbing business full time. Mr. Wine had been installing heating and plumbing systems in homes and churches on a part time basis since the early 1950’s and doing very well.
Two months after Mr. Wine had started his own business full time he was approached by the Humble Oil & Refining Company (now Exxon) to sell heating oil in the Manassas area. Humble felt sales and delivery of their oil would fit right in with the sheet metal and plumbing business.
Mr. Wine agreed and beginning with only five accounts given to him by Humble, he went door to door drumming up new business. At the end of the first year, with Mrs. Wine at the books, they sold an impressive 166,000 gallons of heating oil. In just four years they surpassed the one million gallon mark. In 1973 they incorporated, purchasing Humble’s tanks and equipment, and took direct control of the local accounts.
In 1968 Mr. Wine invented a valve used in above ground oil tanks that drew the oil supply four inches off the bottom of the tank eliminating frozen oil lines in the cold winter months. The valve named the Wine Valve was issued a patent in April 1972.
The youngest daughter, Judy, joined the firm full time in 1973 working both with her Dad in the field, servicing oil burners and with her Mom in the office keeping the books.
